The Luk Dim Boon Gwan
The luk Dim Boon gwan form consists of 6 and one half Individual Techniques. Classical Schools utilize Poles ranging in lengths from 9 to 12 ft, with 9 being the most common due to storage and training space as well as expense. The strikes are Fast , Powerful , direct and above all economical with no wasted motion.
In this first weapons form, The student is introduced to new stances and footwork as well as an understanding of the side centerline and four gate defensive theory. The student further continues to develop his or her understanding of the use of Body structure and mechanic's which are essential if one is to correctly wield a pole of this length and weight and further learns to supplement this power with the use of the waiste.
This form though simple in appearance and short in duration ,contains a great amount of depth extending beyond the use of Pole arms to improvised weapons as well as understanding how to efficiently use the skeletal structure to properly leverage the pole through it's motions. As such it further supplements the system in it's potential for use in Kum La (seize and control).
Few students of Grandmaster Ip Man learned the correct pole form. Our pole form comes from Ip Man's youngest son, Ip Ching who was well known and respected in hong kong for his knowledge of this form. In fact the late master Moy Yat recounted on page 20 of his Privately published Book Legends of the Kung Fu masters about how after Ip Man's death Many of Ip Man's senior students went to great lengths in an effort to get information from Ip Ching about the proper Pole form. It is there for with great pride that we preserve and pass on this tradition!
